Joe Wehinger
Over the weekend, I was at a beachfront hotel in Ventura, CA at a Newspaper Columnist Convention-Meeting. Nice time. But it took me a while to get over my Friday,
One of my clients is a non-entertainment financier. He's a hard-ass, and I learn a lot from him because his world is different from mine in every way. As a result, working with him I learn his corporate and company culture. I take whatever insight I can into my own.
Two weeks ago he asked to read a screenplay I was working on. He wanted to see the other side of what I do. I obliged him. My next meeting with him was last Friday at 5:30p. After my Friday meetings and before my trip to Ventura.
He absolutely tore me apart. Hated the script. Hated my writing. Can't believe someone would want the pages, hire me, be interested. Basically, said I was a bad person, had a small penis, and every other insult you could think of. Yes. It was a negative meeting.
My response: I held eye contact, smiled politely, nodded a few times. Then thanked him for his time.
The kicker. This is an award-winning script that has been optioned by multiple Emmy award and Golden Globe winning producers. It's made me plenty of money and will continue to.
And again, this guy hated it.
Take what you can out of a situation and move on. I got in my car, blasted the radio and sang along for a ninety minute trip North. At a red light, a hot red head caught me singing along. I so didn't care -- I needed it. It felt good and allowed me to vent the bad energy. Saturday morning I awoke at 6am, pulled out my laptop and began revamping my 2010 production work.
I was inspired. I wanted to take that energy and conquer the world.
Now go out there and conquer your world!
